ABOUT THE PROJECT

The proposed project is to undertake a review of current heritage policy and practices for the City of Revelstoke and prepare a Heritage Management Plan (HMP) for the City that includes current best practices in heritage conservation and creates a heritage program that takes into account all of Revelstoke’s heritage values. The process will examine Revelstoke’s current heritage planning initiatives and programs, Official Community Plan, the Revelstoke Station Heritage Conservation Area, design guidelines and other aspects of the City’s heritage. The plan will take a values-based approach to heritage, be developed with community engagement, include appropriate recommendations, tools, strategies and actions, and develop a plan for its implementation.

City to undertake three phases to complete the Revelstoke Heritage Program Review and Heritage Management Plan:

  • Phase 1 - Revelstoke's Historical Context - Complete
  • Phase 2 - Revelstoke's Heritage Places - In Progress
    • Review and update of the inventory and register to conform to best practices
  • Phase 3 - Heritage Management Planning - In Progress
    • Overall review of the heritage situation, policies, strategies and actions to setup the heritage program, conservation tools and updating the heritage information and resources on the City website

HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY HELP?

Community input is very important for creating a vision and strategies for the conservation of Revelstoke’s heritage. The Heritage Management Plan will take into account all of the features that a community thinks have heritage value and will include strategies and tools for protection and management.

See link and information to the community forum and idea board below to submit your ideas to help the City understand what the heritage of Revelstoke is all about, it’s places that matter, and the future of its heritage resources.

Staff, the Heritage Advisory Commission, and the Heritage Consultant worked together to prepare a heritage focused community engagement plan. Engagement activities to date have included:

  • General questionnaire about Revelstoke’s heritage, both as a paper survey and on TalkRevelstoke
  • A questionnaire designed specifically for heritage property owners in the Heritage Conservation Area
  • Two-day community workshop
  • Interviews with community groups and individuals

During the development of the Heritage Management Plan, staff and the Heritage Consultant will continue to undertake interviews with community groups and individuals as needed.

If you are interested in meeting with staff and the Heritage Consultant to discuss aspects of Revelstoke's heritage and importance of conserving heritage, please reach out and contact staff at heritage@revelstoke.ca and our lead Heritage Consultant Denise Cook at denise@denisecookdesign.ca.
