Why is Fourth Street closed?

The City of Revelstoke is undertaking construction work on Fourth Street, across the Downie/Fourth and Edward/Fourth Street intersections. There is a temporary signposted detour to facilitate the construction of traffic calming improvements at these intersections.

    What is the detour route?

As signposted, the detour sends traffic from the Fourth Street roundabout along Victoria Street, Eighth Street and Moss Street, to rejoin Fourth Street ahead of the Fourth Street bridge.

Please note, there are alternative routes that are also available; however, they will not be signposted. These are:

    • Southbound traffic – from town, head east on Townley Street from the roundabout, south on Oscar, west on Leach and back on Fourth Street East before the Illecillewaet Bridge.
    • Northbound traffic – from Arrow Heights, head east on Leach, north on Oscar and west on Townley to the roundabout.

How long will the detour be in place?

The detour will be in place while Fourth Street is closed to non-local traffic for approximately 4-5 weeks. An exact start state is still TBC; however, residents should expect this to be in place from mid to late April, through May.

    Why is this happening?

The work is part of a long-term plan to implement traffic calming enhancements along the full corridor of Fourth St, from the Townley Roundabout to the Illecillewaet Bridge. Initial temporary traffic calming measures were implemented in 2021 as response to a resident-led petition, requesting traffic calming improvements and a safer corridor for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Why do both intersections need to be closed at the same time?

Closing both intersections concurrently allows for the project to be completed more efficiently. Constructing both intersections together means the construction can be completed in 4-5 weeks, rather than 7-8 weeks.

    Why now?

This work is scheduled for the spring shoulder season so that the work takes place prior to Revelstoke's typical busy summer tourism season, and after Revelstoke Mountain Resort’s winter operations, so that the teams can take advantage of lower traffic volumes and more predictable traffic peaks.

Please follow all road rules, posted speed limits and detour signs, and remember to be mindful that our local roads are shared user spaces.

    Is Southside Market still open?

Southside Market is open throughout this construction period. Customers can access Southside Market at both the Edward Street entrance and the Humbert Street entrance throughout this construction period.

I live on a closed road, can I still access and park outside my house?

Yes. Local traffic can still access and park in road closure areas throughout the construction period. Any specific temporary access restrictions will be communicated directly to affected residents by the Contractor ahead of time.

Will my garbage still be collected? Where do I put my bins?

Garbage and recycling collection will be completed throughout the road closures on their scheduled days and times. Residents within the closures do not need to make any changes to their typical routine or placement of bins (put them where you usually do, when you usually do!).

Are there going to be water shut downs?

Water shut downs are not expected to be required during the construction period. If this changes, shut-downs will be communicated to affected residents directly, by a letter drop to the residence, at least 48-hours prior to a shutdown.

Will public transit be impacted? How do I get the bus?

Some BC Transit routes will be affected by this detour. Information can be found via BC Transit Alerts or www.bctransit.com/revelstoke as it becomes available.

There are no sidewalks on Moss Street, how can I, or my child, travel safely through this area as a pedestrian?

Moss Street is a shared user street space. All road users are encouraged to be mindful and respectful of others on the road. As an alternative option, sidewalk access will be maintained throughout construction - pedestrians can travel along Fourth, Edward and Eighth Streets to utilize existing sidewalks.
